New Members

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet) this week, as they become the Coalition’s 95th member.

AARNet is the architect, builder and operator of network infrastructure and an expanding portfolio of products and services, designed to meet the needs of over two million users in the research and education sector in Australia.

“We are keen to improve digital preservation literacy within our company, across member institutions, and more broadly within Australia’s research, education and cultural heritage domains,” explains Adam Bell, Cultural Outreach Manager for AARNet.

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) as its newest associate member.

Based in Washington DC and with a dual mission to preserve and make available the permanent records of the government of the United States, NARA is custodian for physical and electronic federal records, with current electronic records comprising approximately 1.5 billion files.

The size of these holdings will increase dramatically after 2022, as new regulations require government agencies to stop transferring paper records and transfer born-digital or digitized records instead.

The University of Westminster becomes the latest organization to join the Digital Preservation Coalition.

The University of Westminster Records and Archives service manages the institutional records of the University and its predecessor bodies dating back to 1838. The archives include several deposited research collections, a garment collection and a small number of rare books. The integrated archives and records management environment supports an holistic approach to digital record-keeping from the point of creation as they collect and preserve records in order to make them accessible for use both now and in the future.

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome Yale University Library as its newest Full Member.

With a digital preservation program in progress since 2013, the Library has a large volume of digital assets to preserve and an active community of stakeholders who are invested in their long-term preservation.

The Library team is currently working to make emulation and software preservation ‘business as usual’ activities in which everyone doing digital preservation can easily participate, as well as considering plans to fund and grow future activities around research data preservation, and  managing challenges with automating preservation and maintaining access to research data.

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the National Archives of Australia, as they become its newest Associate member.

Collecting and preserving Australian Government records which reflect the country’s history and identity, the National Archives of Australia (NAA) is in a period of digital transformation. As part of this NAA is leading a whole-of-government approach to digital information governance that takes full effect in 2020, and are undertaking a phased, multi-year program to modernise its capabilities to embed secure digital end-to-end archival processes.

The DPC is delighted to announce that communications services provider BT has joined the Coalition as an Associate Member this month.

Preserving the history of BT and its predecessors, BT Heritage & Archives is the custodian of the Group’s corporate memory – both physical and digital. The Archive, which is recognised by UNESCO and Arts Council England as being of international importance, showcases Britain’s role in the development of telecommunications and the impact of the technology on society. Part of the digital collection includes digitised material available online - an extraordinary array of documents, images, plans, photographs and correspondence. There are also key digital records created by the company more recently that will enter the collection. These records chart innovations from the company’s recent past to today, such as the launch of the 5G network this year.

The University of Bristol becomes the newest organisation to join the Digital Preservation Coalition as Associate Member this month.

The University holds a wide range of digital assets in its cultural collections including born digital materials, digitised and analogue material. With the aim of safeguarding these assets for future use, as well as embedding digital collections in teaching, learning and research, the Library in conjunction with the University’s Theatre Collection has embarked on a project to implement a digital preservation system.

Channel 4 has joined the DPC as its newest Associate Member. Channel 4 is a public service broadcaster in the UK which is publicly owned, free to air but commercially funded.  Their digital archive looks after significant amounts of web materials as well as business documents and a diverse range of digital materials. 

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the Archives and Records Management Section of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as they become the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field. It works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

The DPC is delighted to announce that the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, CERN, has joined the Coalition as a Full Member this month.

CERN has three main digital preservation interests: Scientific Data from CERN’s accelerators, notably the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where the data volume at the end of LHC Run2 (end 2018) is over 300PB; Scientific publications, papers and articles; and CERN’s “digital memory”, including meeting minutes, photographs, video recordings and scanned legacy material.
