The DPC’s Audiovisual Special Interest Group (AVSIG) brings together staff from DPC Member organizations to discuss issues and challenges relating to the preservation of digital content that is either audio, video, or both. Discussions may also encompass the digitization or conversion of pre-existing AV content (whether analogue or digital), but the focus is on the implications of such activities for the long-term preservation of the outputs.
AVSIG provides an opportunity to share experiences, discuss good practice, and identify and address common problems. We try to complement, not duplicate, the activities of the many other AV-related groups and meetings that take place around the globe.
There is no formal membership list for AVSIG, and meetings are advertised to all current DPC Members via the usual channels – such as the DPC’s events page and weekly digest posted to the DPC-DISCUSSION mailing list.
There is no restriction on the number of staff from any Member organization who can attend a meeting of AVSIG but it is assumed that anyone attending a meeting is either actively engaged with the preservation of digital AV content or is at least familiar with some of the challenges. We also welcome attendance by people who simply want to learn more about the topic under discussion and to learn from, and share with, the wider digital preservation community.
Meetings take place bi-monthly, usually towards the end of the month, and are scheduled on rotation to suit Members based in major time zones around the world (e.g. the Americas, Australasia and Asia-Pacific, and Europe, Africa, and the Middle East).
