Born digital archive cataloguing and description: DPC publishes new Technology Watch Guidance Note on Access to Digital Collections

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) has released a Member preview of the next in its series of Technology Watch Guidance Notes entitled Born digital archive cataloguing and description, by Jenny Bunn, today.
Born digital archive cataloguing and description seeks to provide guidance to support organisations and individuals in making sense of the technological developments relating to the presentation and accessibility of their collection information.
National Film & Sound Archive joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the National Film & Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) as the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.
Established in 1984, the NFSA is Australia’s living archive with a mission to collect, preserve and share Australia’s audiovisual heritage. As custodians of over 3.3 million items, of which approximately half are digital, digital preservation is a core element of the organization’s mission to preserve and share its collection.
Global support offered to University of Cape Town Libraries following catastrophic fire

The digital preservation community around the world wakes this week to alarming news of a catastrophic fire at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Library, as well as university residences and campus buildings.
This shocking incident brings us together with an immediate outpouring of solidarity and concern for the team at the University of Cape Town Libraries. We join Director Satgoor in thanking authorities for their prompt and co-ordinated efforts which have prevented loss of life.
UCT is a member of the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC): distress for one of our members is distress for all of us. Therefore the DPC, a global community focussed on preservation, offers unconditional support to staff, students and friends of the University as they face this trauma. We stand with them as they assess the damage and losses to the library, archives and special collections; and our members around the world are ready with help and assistance to aid recovery.
DPC RAM 2.0 now available!

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) relaunches an updated version of its Rapid Assessment Model (or DPC RAM) this week.
Designed to enable rapid benchmarking of an organization’s digital preservation capability, the DPC RAM is a digital preservation maturity modelling tool which aims to be applicable for organizations of any size in any sector, and for all content of long-term value.
National Library Board, Singapore joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the National Library Board, Singapore (NLB) as the Coalition’s newest Full Member.
NLB is the official custodian of Singapore's published and documentary heritage, archival materials of national and historical significance in Singapore, government records and broadcast archives.
As part of its Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025, NLB aims to build on its role as an enduring source of knowledge on Singapore and its place in the world. To this end, NLB is committed to an ongoing programme to collect, preserve, and make accessible digital content on Singapore, and aspires to become a Trusted Digital Repository and an authority on digital preservation for the nation.
Digital Preservation Coalition releases Arabic translation of the Executive Guide on Digital Preservation

In a move to add to the global resources for digital preservation, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates have collaborated to produce an Arabic translation of the Executive Guide on Digital Preservation.
The Executive Guide on Digital Preservation was developed by the DPC in the UK with the support of the UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) programme.
According to Dr. Abdulla Alraisi, Director General of the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates and the chair of the International Advisory Committee of the MoW programme, "The Executive Guide is an important contribution to the development of digital preservation activities and to the sustainable preservation of documentary heritage in UNESCO Member States. We are delighted to join the DPC in making the Executive Guide more widely available and providing the digital preservation community with more resources."
The Digital Preservation Coalition welcomes East Sussex and Brighton and Hove Record Office as its newest member

East Sussex and Brighton and Hove Record Office (ESBHRO) have joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) this month, becoming the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.
ESBHRO is responsible for the preservation of the historical record of both its county and city, with records including born digital and digitised. Their holdings are maintained at The Keep archive centre in Brighton on the south coast of England, run as a partnership between East Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council and the University of Sussex.
Ceris Howard, who is Team Manager for Archive Services and The Keep at ESBHRO, is also responsible for the corporate digital preservation strategy for East Sussex County Council (ESCC) and works with the Records Management Service and colleagues from across ESCC to promote and find solutions for digital storage, access and retention.
National Library of Israel joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

Established to collect, preserve, cultivate and endow the knowledge, heritage and culture of Israel, NLI’s goal is to become an institution at the frontier of information and cultural ingenuity. NLI is committed to making a robust contribution to the international effort of preserving the cultural heritage of humankind.
Public Record Office Victoria joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) this month, as they become the Coalition’s newest Associate member.
Responsible for the archives of the State Government of Victoria in Australia and, having launched its Victorian Electronic Records Strategy (VERS) in 1999, PROV is committed to digital preservation to ensure key Victorian Government records remain usable and accessible over time.
PROV was the first state archive in Australia to implement a digital archive and develop a unique information package to encapsulate digital material and associated metadata into a single object, and is this year set to launch a brand-new digital archive and suite of systems to manage and facilitate access to its collection.
Pragmatic Audiovisual Preservation: DPC releases new Technology Watch Report

First released to members on World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the DPC is pleased to announce the launch of its latest Technology Watch Report, Pragmatic Audiovisual Preservation by Ashley Blewer.
A specialist in video, digital preservation workflows and infrastructure, Ashley currently works for Artefactual and acknowledged that the preservation of audiovisual materials remains a challenging topic, saying: “Moving beyond the complexity of audiovisual materials and the urgency around digitization, concepts related to significant technical characteristics and the impact each has on digital audiovisual files can be very daunting.”
Her report for the DPC, Pragmatic Audiovisual Preservation, aims to provide easily digestible – and pragmatic - guidance for practitioners with a basic knowledge of digital preservation concepts and archival practices, but without expertise in audiovisual materials.
