The Digital Preservation Coalition welcomes CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, as Full Member

The DPC is delighted to announce that the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, CERN, has joined the Coalition as a Full Member this month.

CERN has three main digital preservation interests: Scientific Data from CERN’s accelerators, notably the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where the data volume at the end of LHC Run2 (end 2018) is over 300PB; Scientific publications, papers and articles; and CERN’s “digital memory”, including meeting minutes, photographs, video recordings and scanned legacy material.

ipres2019The Call for Contributions for iPRES2019 is now open. iPRES is the premier international conference on the preservation and long term management of digital materials. The 16th International Conference on Digital Preservation will be held on September 16-20, 2019 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

You are invited to submit original contributions that describe practice- and theory-informed approaches to scientific models, daily practice, collaborative efforts, creative solutions, and the progress your organization has made in digital preservation.

Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The National Library of Luxembourg, la Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg, has joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) this month, becoming the Coalition’s newest Full Member.

As part of its legal mission as a national heritage library, Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg (BnL) collects, catalogues, enriches and preserves all publications issued in Luxembourg as well as all those issued abroad relating to the Grand Duchy. Through its Digital Preservation project, the BnL ensures the management, availability and long-term preservation of digital publications, resulting from a digitization process, collection of born-digital material or through legal deposit.

Digital Preservation community celebrates World Digital Preservation Day

WDPD English Portrait RGB29th November marks World Digital Preservation Day 2018 (WDPD2018). Organized as a way to celebrate the ordinarily uncelebrated work of a large, growing and widely dispersed digital preservation community, the day will bring together individuals and institutions from across the world, highlighting and profiling the importance of their work.

Digital materials remain a core commodity for industry, commerce and government. They are fundamental for research, the law and medicine. The creative industries, cultural heritage and the media depend on reliable access to digital materials, while families and friends extend and sustain their relationships through digital interactions. The opportunities created by these digital materials rely on the work of the digital preservation community.

Annual General Meeting of the DPC

DPC members are invited to the Sixteenth Annual General Meeting of the Digital Preservation Coalition which will be held on Thursday 13th December, in Room G21A, Senate House, Malet Street, the University of London, WC1E 7HU.

Tea and coffee will be served at 14:30 GMT and the meeting will commence at 15:00 GMT.  It is scheduled to be complete at 15:30 GMT. Options are available for members wishing to dial in to the meeting.

As a reminder, Full Members are invited also to send delegates to the Representative Council which will precede (lunch at 12:00 GMT, Representative Council from 12:30 GMT).

As a largely public-funded repository the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) believes it is important to make long-term preservation of digital materials open to a wide range of organisations, including those operating on a non-funded, voluntary basis. To that end, the DRI is launching a Community Archives Membership Scheme. One organisation will be granted a year’s free membership for the year 2019 under this Scheme.

The iPRES2019 Programme Committee is excited to announce the Themes & Topics for iPRES2019! Thanks to the digipres community, we received lots of ideas and suggestions for the 2019 Amsterdam programming.

Central Theme

The main theme in 2019 is Eye on the Horizon and aims to broaden the voices and approaches participating in the conference. In this spirit, the iPRES 2019 Programme Committee invited the digital preservation community to share their ideas in a Participatory #iPRES2019 Programme Design.
