Global Toolkit Ambassador Introduction

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Global Toolkit Ambassador.

This page explains the purpose of the programme, what ambassadors do, and what community groups can expect to gain from it.

Why We Have a Global Ambassador Programme

The Digital Preservation Toolkit for Community Archives was originally created through a UK‑based project. As a result:

  • Funding was limited, and the initial design focused on a UK audience.

  • Since launch, we have received many requests for versions tailored to other countries.

  • Creating separate toolkits for every national context would be unsustainable and could cause confusion.

At the same time, effective digital preservation relies on local knowledge—including cultural practices, community needs, and relevant legislation. This expertise is essential both for adapting the toolkit and for supporting community groups to use it confidently.

The DPC is not best placed to provide this localised support directly. Instead, the Global Toolkit Ambassador Programme enables the DPC to partner with organisations and professionals worldwide who can guide community groups in preserving their digital content.

Programme Purpose and Positioning

Mission

Increase global awareness, understanding, and use of the Digital Preservation Toolkit for Community Archives.

Target Audiences

Community archives, grassroots heritage groups, small museums, volunteer‑run collections, diaspora communities, and activist archives.

Ambassador Role

Ambassadors act as a bridge between the toolkit and local heritage ecosystems—supporting events, offering high level advice, and sharing insights back to the DPC.

How the Ambassador Programme Works

  • Professional organisations can register as ambassadors through the DPC website.

  • Ambassadors gain access to the Global Ambassador Toolkit, which they may use to support community groups by:

    • Using the toolkit to advise groups on how to begin preserving their digital content.

    • Incorporating toolkit resources into their own presentations, workshops, or facilitated sessions.

  • The DPC provides support to ambassador organisations by sharing knowledge and answering questions that ambassadors cannot resolve locally.

  • Ambassadors may freely use and adapt toolkit materials. There are no restrictions on re‑use.

Role of the Ambassador Organisation

Responsibilities

  • Host or co‑host events, workshops, or awareness sessions.

  • Provide light‑touch advisory support to community archives.

  • Promote the toolkit through local networks, conferences, and social media.

  • Collect case studies, feedback, and sector insights.

  • Support translation and localisation where appropriate.

Boundaries

  • Ambassadors are not expected to provide in‑depth consultancy.

  • Ambassadors support projects by providing knowledge and suggesting networks and organizations to collaborate with but are not responsible for their long-term delivery.
