Digital Cleanup Day on 21 March is a good reminder that digital clutter has a footprint too. To mark the day, the DPC is kicking off its own internal digital clean-up by tackling our email inboxes. We’ll be clearing out what we no longer need and recording how much space we save along the way.

It’s a small step, but one that can have a real impact: reducing unnecessary data can help cut CO₂ emissions, keep devices running more smoothly for longer, make information easier to find and share, improve data security by reducing avoidable risks, and free up storage space that would otherwise cost money to maintain.
It also comes at a timely moment, as the DPC gets ready to publish a draft of its Carbon Footprint Toolkit next week to support organizations thinking about the environmental impact of their digital practice. Watch this space for more…
We encourage you to take part in Digital Cleanup Day too, whether as an individual or an organization. The organizers have created a range of handy guides to help you get started, including a practical email guide, Cleaning your emails. There are plenty of other on the Digital Cleanup Day website, and we’d love to hear what small steps you are taking.
