The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is pleased to announce the general release of Digital Disaster Risk Management for Repositories and Archives today, 13 October 2026, marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. Following a one-month exclusive preview for DPC members, this Technology Watch Guidance Note is now freely available to all.

The international observance highlights the importance of understanding disaster risks and taking action to reduce their impact. For repositories and archives, preparation is essential to protecting digital collections and maintaining access when disruption occurs.

Authored by Annette Mills, Collection Development Leader at the City of Charles Sturt, and Dr Heather Brown, Librarian Education, Sector Standards at the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the Guidance Note is aimed at digital repositories and archives of all sizes.

It explores risks associated with climate change, electrical outages, infrastructure maintenance and other disruptive events. It highlights the importance of proactive disaster risk management before, during and after an incident, helping organizations identify potential risks and understand how preparation and planning can reduce their impact.

The publication offers a timely opportunity for those responsible for digital collections to review their preparedness and strengthen the resilience of their preservation infrastructure and services.

The Technology Watch publication series is just one of the ways the DPC supports the digital preservation community. An international charitable foundation and advocate for digital preservation, the Coalition helps its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, tailored support and consultancy, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
