The National Library of Colombia joins in the celebration of Digital Preservation around the world. This year one of the reflections is about what an image tells us about the story. An image can mean a lot or really nothing without a context, in a different year, country or culture.
So, with that in mind, in 2017, in a colonial old house in Colombia, 17 cartoonists gathered to express through images their thoughts about the recent peace process in Colombia, the negotiation between Farc Guerrilla and Colombian Government, led by the former President Juan Manuel Santos.
In that event, the National Library asked for permission to recover, access and preserve their digital political cartoons; authorization is needed while we are working on behalf of legal deposit.
Cartoonists like Betto, Leo, Bacteria, Vladdo, Xthina and Chocolo are part of the Colombian bibliographic heritage, preserved by the National Library of Colombia. But, what does it mean? Truly preservation? Not at all. But it means a start.
This process began with the compilation of works carried out by Betto Cartoon, awarded with the Simón Bolívar Journalism Award in 2017; his work has been published in newspapers such as El Espectador. Leonardo Parra “Leo”, one of the youngest cartoonists in the country, was presented with the CPB Award – Circle of Journalists of Bogotá, 2017. He has published in newspapers and magazines such as Revista Semana.
This identification and recollection process only includes the peace process, implementation and post-agreement images. Over 1500 images have been delivered to the Library, published between 2010 and 2022. Only 60 have been described in the 2 past years. The metadata collected includes the title, the date of publication, hardware, softwares and their versions, the weight of each digital object, the copyrights over the cartoons and data about the person responsible for the work. The personal data about the cartoonist is reserved in a digital system and no one can access to that information, only the administrator of the system and the copyright professional has access.
From the date of publication, the National Library rebuilt the context based on tags, news, comments and other items published at that time, to describe the facts surrounding the cartoon and including the cartoonist point of view behind the cartoons.
Those cartoon descriptions, identification and recollection of third resources have been possible thanks to the agreement between Universidad Externado de Colombia, Universidad Nacional de Colombia and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and support from Rhizome.
This has taken a lot of time, but it has been worth it to see the memories, and to reflect upon what the digital construction of our near past means in relation the to colombian peace process; after all 10 years is not long when you think about digital resources related to the cartoons that have disappeared in just a few years.
La caricatura política como recurso para narrar la memoria del último proceso de paz colombiano
La Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia se une para celebrar la Preservación Digital en todo el mundo. Este año una de las reflexiones es sobre lo que nos dice una imagen sobre la historia. Una imagen puede significar mucho o realmente nada sin un contexto, en un año, país o cultura diferente.
Entonces, con eso en mente, en 2017, en Colombia, en una antigua casona colonial, se reunieron 17 caricaturistas para exponer a través de imágenes, su pensamiento sobre el reciente proceso de paz en Colombia, la negociación entre guerrilleros de las Farc y el Gobierno colombiano, encabezado por el ex Presidente Juan Manuel Santos.
En ese evento, la Biblioteca Nacional solicitó permisos para recuperar, acceder y conservar sus caricaturas políticas digitales, la autorización se hace necesaria mientras se logra la actualización de la legislación sobre depósito legal.
Dibujantes como Betto, Leo, Bacteria, Vladdo, Xthina y Chocolo forman parte del patrimonio bibliográfico colombiano, conservado por la Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. ¿Pero, qué significa? ¿Es verdaderamente preservación? No del todo. Pero significa un comienzo.
Este proceso se inició con la recopilación de trabajos realizados por Betto Cartoon, premiado con el Premio de Periodismo Simón Bolívar en 2017, su trabajo ha sido publicado en diarios como El Espectador. Leonardo Parra “Leo”, uno de los caricaturistas más jóvenes del país, premio CPB – Círculo de Periodistas de Bogotá, 2017. Ha publicado en diarios y revistas como Revista Semana.
Este proceso de identificación y recolección solo incluyó imágenes del proceso de paz, implementación y post-acuerdo. Se han entregado a la Biblioteca más de 1500 imágenes, publicadas entre 2010 y 2022. Solo 60 han sido descritas en los 2 últimos años. Los metadatos recogidos han incluido el título, la fecha de publicación, el hardware, software y sus versiones, el peso de cada objeto digital, los derechos de autor sobre las viñetas y datos sobre el responsable de la obra, en ese caso, los datos personales sobre el dibujante están reservado en un sistema digital y nadie puede acceder a esa información, solo el administrador del sistema y el profesional de derechos de autor.
Con base en la fecha de publicación, la Biblioteca Nacional reconstruye el contexto a partir de etiquetas, noticias, comentarios y otros elementos publicados en ese momento que permitan describir los hechos que rodean a la viñeta e incluir el punto de vista del dibujante detrás de las caricaturas.
Estas descripciones de caricaturas, identificación y recolección de recursos externos han sido posibles gracias al convenio entre la Universidad Externado de Colombia, la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana y gracias al apoyo de Rhizome.
Este deber ha llevado mucho tiempo, pero ha valido la pena hacer una reflexión sobre lo que significa la construcción digital de nuestro pasado cercano relacionado con el proceso de paz colombiano, al fin y al cabo 10 años no son demasiado cuando se piensa en recursos digitales relacionados con las caricaturas que desaparecieron hace tan solo unos años.
