The biggest celebration of the year is happening in just four weeks from today: on Thursday 6th November it’s all about World Digital Preservation Day (#WDPD2025)!

World Digital Preservation Day is a great opportunity to raise global awareness for digital preservation and to connect the digital preservation community. Every year, on the first Thursday of November, we celebrate all things digital preservation and in 2025, we’re bringing a special focus on the different reasons why we preserve!

Through this year's theme Why Preserve? we invite digital preservation practitioners to reflect on their organization’s motivations for preserving their unique digital collections, to share their stories, and to transform those insights into compelling advocacy messages.

Organized by the DPC and supported by digital preservation networks around the globe, World Digital Preservation Day is open to participation from anyone interested in securing our digital legacy - across all sectors and geographic locations. Join us in a whole day dedicated to discovering digital preservation stories and answers to the question Why Preserve? and share your unique motivations through blog posts, social media posts, events and creative activities!

Whether you organize a webinar, highlight the collections you are working on using social media, bake (or crochet!) a digital asset or get together with your colleagues to tell them more about digital preservation: there are so many ways to participate in #WDPD2025!

Visit our webpages to be inspired by some of the awesome singer-songwriter actions from previous years, read last year’s amazing blogs, and make sure to use the WDPD 2025 logo in your own language to promote your event.

A reminder that the WDPD stickers are available to order! They’re a fun and simple way to start conversations about digital preservation - whether with colleagues, friends, or those new to the community. Please note that stock is limited and orders will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

In an exciting development on World Digital Preservation Day on Thursday 6th November, alongside the iPRES 2025 conference (3-7 November) in Wellington, the DPC will launch a global 'Why Preserve?' campaign, equipping the global digital preservation community with compelling advocacy messages and resources to advocate for the importance of preserving our digital assets. To top it off, we will publish blogs from the DPC community all day long!

There is so much happening on World Digital Preservation Day, we can't wait to hear what YOU are organizing on 6th November! There’s a special page on the DPC website with all the events happening around the world. If you'd like your event to be listed on the DPC website too, please contact angela.puggioni@dpconline.org.

Stay tuned next week as we'll publish an event pack to prepare for your own event, including a #WDPD2025 themed background for your online events and a new edition of digital preservation bingo to get your event off to a fun start.

World Digital Preservation Day is just one of the ways the DPC helps to raise awareness of the strategic, cultural, and technological issues which make up the digital preservation challenge. The DPC also supports members through other advocacy activities, workforce development, and partnerships, helping members to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services and derive enduring value from their digital collections.
