The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the Russian Independent Media Archive (RIMA) as its newest Associate Member.
Launched in 2023, the Russian Independent Media Archive is part of Kronika, an initiative dedicated to preserving public-interest information threatened by censorship, political pressure, and deliberate erasure. Alongside RIMA, Kronika also operates the Central American Independent Media Archive (CAIMA) and develops shared digital infrastructure to support endangered media archives across regions.
RIMA focuses on preserving independent Russian journalism published since 2000 - work that has been systematically targeted by state censorship, legal pressure, and forced shutdowns. The archive has already preserved 150 independent media outlets and more than 7.5 million articles. Its collections include digitized print publications with full-text search, materials from outlets that were forced to shut down due to censorship and state pressure, as well as publications from newsrooms that continue to operate today despite ongoing repression and restrictions.
RIMA safeguards not only historical records, but also evidence of journalistic work that authoritarian regimes seek to erase from public memory. By collecting, preserving, and providing access to these materials, RIMA supports journalists, researchers, historians, and the public in understanding Russia’s recent past and present.
“Digital preservation is essential to RIMA’s mission of safeguarding at-risk independent Russian media for long-term access and reuse,” says RIMA’s Co-Founder and Program Director Ilia Venyavkin. “By joining the Digital Preservation Coalition, we are strengthening our commitment to the long-term preservation of independent journalism and to engaging with the global digital preservation community.”

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.

Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) приветствует Russian Independent Media Archive (RIMA) среди новых участников международного профессионального сообщества, занимающегося долгосрочным цифровым сохранением.
Архив российских независимых медиа был создан в 2023 году при поддержке PEN America и Bard College. RIMA является частью проекта Kronika — глобальной инициативы, которая занимается сохранением общественно значимой информации, находящейся под угрозой цензуры, политического давления и умышленного уничтожения. Помимо RIMA, Kronika развивает Архив независимых медиа Центральной Америки (Central American Independent Media Archive, CAIMA) и создаёт общую цифровую инфраструктуру, помогающую защищать уязвимые медиа-архивы в разных регионах.
Задача Архива российских независимых медиа — защитить цифровое наследие независимой российской журналистики, оказавшейся под давлением цензуры и угрозой исчезновения. Архив уже сохранил 150 независимых медиа и более 7,5 миллиона статей, опубликованных независимыми медиа с 2000 года и по настоящее время. В коллекцию входят оцифрованные бумажные издания с возможностью полнотекстового поиска, материалы медиа, закрытых из-за цензуры и давления властей, а также публикации тех редакций, которые продолжают работать сегодня — несмотря на преследования и ограничения.
RIMA делает специальные архивы, проводит образовательные программы и активно работает с исследователями, становясь частью глобального сообщества, занимающегося сохранением памяти и цифрового наследия.
