About the role

The National Archives' digital strategy sets out the ambition to transform itself into an archive that is digital by instinct and design, embracing disruptive innovation to re-invent what it means to be an archive in the digital age. This role is about building for the future, harnessing user research and technical innovation to create solid foundations for services that channel digital records into the archive, protect and preserve them for the future and open up access.

You will be motivated to find solutions to complex problems and will frequently look for opportunities to do things better. The National Archives are looking for an excellent senior systems engineer who thrives on working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams. This is an opportunity to work with similarly committed and talented developers, designers, archivists and researchers who share a passion for creating high quality, user-focused digital services for a range of audiences.

The following criteria will be used for short listing:

  • In-depth technical knowledge and extensive experience of the varied software and hardware technologies utilised in the Digital Archiving Infrastructure, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, configuration management / deployment tools such as Puppet and Red Hat Satellite, together with CISCO firewall and switch configuration
  • Broad knowledge of a range of open-source software technologies, including Apache, Tomcat, Zenoss and Squid
  • Good understanding of the security guidance issued by the National Cyber Security Centre and working knowledge of the Government Digital Service Technology Code of Practice

In addition the following criteria will be assessed at interview:

  • Knowledge of Test-driven / Agile methodologies, in particular Scrum and the principles of continuous delivery
  • Excellent ability to analyse and problem solve using a methodical and meticulous approach, together with strong decision-making skills
  • Demonstrable ability to recommend system / service enhancements that take into account the business needs of the wider organisation and a strong commitment to continuing technical and professional skill development
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships and to work productively, either independently or collaboratively as part of a team

The successful candidate will be required to obtain SC level clearance and will need to have resided in the UK for the past 5 years or more.
