The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) has published a new annual statement to accompany the Global Bit List of Endangered Digital Materials this World Digital Preservation Day, Thursday 5 November.
While the Bit List itself is updated every two years and will next be revised in 2027, this new statement offers the digital preservation community an opportunity to consider the existing Bit List through the lens of today's rapidly changing environment.
The statement reflects on developments since the 2025 edition, including geopolitical instability, cyber threats, economic pressures, environmental disruption and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on the digital preservation landscape. It highlights how these changes influence both the risks facing digital materials and the capacity of organisations to respond.
Rather than replacing or updating the current Bit List, the annual statement helps readers interpret its risk categories in light of contemporary challenges and opportunities. It also recognises the ongoing innovation, collaboration and resilience demonstrated across the digital preservation community.
The annual statement has been published for World Digital Preservation Day 2026 and is available now as a companion resource to the current Bit List.
