About the Opportunity

The Senior Digital Preservation Specialist supports the creation of policies, and an overarching framework, for digital preservation at State Library Victoria. The role will support the creation, operationalising, and monitoring of digital preservation standard operating procedures.

The Specialist will have sound knowledge of contemporary digital preservation practices and applies that knowledge to the creation of a digital preservation framework, ensuring robust, scalable, and stable mechanisms are developed to enable the long-term safekeeping of digital collections.

About You

We value your familiarity with preservation metadata implementation strategies (PREMIS), open archival information systems (OAIS) and open-source software tools such as DROID.  You also have the capacity to balance structure and attention to detail with the ability and willingness to adapt methods of delivery.  Importantly, you are able to navigate complex issues that require a nuanced approach, and can bring stakeholders along through engagement and influence.

In addition, you will come to us with:

  • Experience in digital preservation and library practices and systems and their integration with business and technical requirements in a large and complex service delivery environment.

  • Understanding of principles of system integration and knowledge of scripting languages.

  • Familiarity with standard file formats used for digital data (e.g. JPG, TIFF, WAV, PDF), the PREMIS framework, the OAIS model, preservation utilities such as JHOVE and DROID, and metadata standards such as XML, MARC, Dublin Core, METS, and EAD.

  • Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline (e.g. Information Systems, database management) or equivalent relevant experience.
