The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to share that Digital Preservation Analyst Andrew Jackson is featured in the latest episode of the Code for Thought podcast, hosted by Peter Schmidt.

Launched in 2021, Code for Thought is a podcast about software for research and the people who make it, exploring the tools, practices, and challenges shaping research software today.

Titled Making Data Last, the episode brings together five experts to explore data loss, recovery, and the broader challenges of preserving digital assets. Introducing the episode, Peter Schmidt notes:

“Preserving digital data has become essential for archives and libraries, as we have seen an explosion of content. I met with experts who explore different aspects of saving our data for future generations.”

Andrew joined Thorsten Ries (University of Texas at Austin, USA), Nanna Bonde Thylstrup and Katherine Clare Mackinnon (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), and Laurisa Sastoque Pabon (University of Southampton, UK), reflecting on the scale of the digital preservation challenge, including the ever-present issue of format obsolescence and the importance of shared community efforts.

Reflecting on the experience, Andrew said:

“I’ve been a listener of the Code for Thought podcast for many years, so I was very happy to be invited on to speak about the DPC, format obsolescence, and the scale of the digital preservation challenge. It’s always valuable to reach new audiences, share what we do, and highlight work such as the Registries of Good Practice project. I also really enjoyed hearing from the other guests on the Making Data Last episode and their perspectives on the perils and potential of digital preservation.”

The episode is available via major podcast platforms and on YouTube.
