In just seven weeks, on Thursday 6 November, it’s all about World Digital Preservation Day (#WDPD2025)!
World Digital Preservation Day is a brilliant opportunity to raise global awareness for digital preservation and to connect our worldwide community. Every year, on the first Thursday of November, we celebrate all things digital preservation - and in 2025 we’re asking a simple yet powerful question: Why Preserve?
This year’s theme invites digital preservation practitioners to explore the diverse motivations behind digital preservation efforts. We are encouraging organizations to reflect on their unique reasons to preserve their digital assets and to share their stories.
On the Day itself, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) will also launch a global 'Why Preserve?' campaign, equipping the global digital preservation community with compelling advocacy messages and practical resources to champion the importance of safeguarding our digital assets.
WDPD is organised by the DPC and supported by networks around the globe, and it’s open to anyone interested in securing our digital legacy - across all sectors and locations. We warmly invite data creators, curators, consumers, researchers, and community members everywhere to contribute their stories and insights this year.
How YOU can participate in World Digital Preservation Day:
-
Write a blog post about your “why” and your preservation journey
-
Share collections you’re working on across social media with #WDPD2025
-
Run a webinar, lightning talk, open house, or a mini skill‑share with colleagues
-
Get creative: bake or crochet, make art, code, playlists - you choose!
There’s a dedicated page on the DPC website listing events happening around the world; if you’d like yours included, please email angela.puggioni@dpconline.org. For more ideas and examples, visit the WDPD webpages to explore highlights from previous years and great blog contributions.
To help you get ready, we are currently creating the visuals you need to promote your activity. The WDPD logo set will be available next week in 42 languages, giving you plenty of choice for your outreach. Please note that sticker orders will open soon, so keep an eye out for updates! Make sure to follow #WDPD2025 on social media for all the latest news.
World Digital Preservation Day is just one of the ways the DPC raises awareness of the strategic, cultural, and technological issues that make up the digital preservation challenge. The DPC also supports members through advocacy, workforce development, and partnerships - helping to ensure resilient long‑term access to digital content and lasting value from digital collections.
