About the opportunity 

The Digital Archivist is responsible for creating, enhancing and maintaining metadata for State Library Victoria’s born digital original manuscripts/archives and picture collections, and for ingesting these collections into digital preservation systems. Applying knowledge of digital preservation principles and systems, file formats, metadata structures, archival arrangement, and collection description, you will ensure that collection items are preserved and described, supporting access now and into the future.

The Digital Archivist is accountable for the following measurable outcomes:

  • Ingest of digital collection material, enabling collection preservation

  • Creation, enhancement and maintenance of collection metadata, supporting collection preservation and discoverability

  • Supporting the implementation of the Library’s Digital Preservation Framework and relevant policies, tools, workflows and processes

  • Supporting the creation of standard operating procedures to ensure the long-term safekeeping of digital assets through the delivery of innovative solutions

About you 

  • Experience in digital preservation practices and library and/or archival systems applications, and their integration with business and technical requirements in a complex service delivery environment.

  • Experience in the application of contemporary metadata and structural standards and schemas for description.

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, g. information management, records management, information systems or database management (required).

  • Experience developing documentation and delivering training for processes and procedures.

  • Knowledge of archival practice, including the description and arrangement of collections.

  • An understanding of copyright, donor restrictions, privacy and permissions issues related to processing born-digital original materials (desirable).
