Department : Archaeology Data Service

The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is a world-leading digital repository which provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology. We are a recognised component of UKRI’s research infrastructure and hold the Core Trust Seal.  We are based in the University of York but work closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors. All archived data is available Open Access and ADS funding is equally split between data deposit charges and research and consultancy, including a number of international projects.

This is a new role which is designed to increase the applications development capacity of the ADS, to lead on improving the current applications stack and enhancement of services, and to lead the small team of developers in evolving best practices and skills training

Role: Lead Applications Developer

You will lead a team that develops web applications across all areas of ADS activity. The primary focus of your role will be to provide line management and senior technical leadership to developers who are working on new projects and supporting existing services. You will take a hands-on development role and work collaboratively to define common approaches to application development and integration, and develop the team's adoption of Agile ways of working.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You should have:

  • A degree level qualification in an IT field or equivalent employment experience of more than 3 years

  • Knowledge of current software development practices, software architectures, modern web application development, the support of high availability IT systems, and the design and operation of IT systems in relation to GDPR

  • The ability to reconcile conflicting priorities, to work under pressure, and to respond positively to complete tasks to deadlines and specified standards in a busy service environment

  • The ability to communicate complex topics to a technical and non-technical audience

  • The proven ability to lead complex software development projects in collaboration with others, including technical leadership, innovation and, problem resolution

  • The ability to develop team members through training, mentoring and coaching

  • Experience of introducing new development practices into teams, managing and motivating team members, and involvement in IT projects covering the full project lifecycle

  • Experience of using and developing web services (APIs), of modern OO/dynamic programming languages such as JavaScript, Ruby, or Java, SQL and the design of relational databases, and of application development using HTML, XML and modern front-end frameworks

  • A proactive approach to keeping technical and professional skills relevant and up to date, a commitment to delivering high quality customer focussed service, strong team-building skills, an ability to build highly collaborative teams, and a positive attitude and willingness to be flexible and adaptable in response to the changing needs of the role
