Amidst the excitement of the Digital Preservation Coalition’s (DPC) Relaunch Roadshow series of events to celebrate the successful establishment of its Melbourne Office, the Coalition is delighted to welcome the National Museum of Australia (NMA) as its newest Associate member.

Located in Canberra, the NMA tells stories of Australia with a particular focus on First Nations histories and culture, European settlement, and interaction with the environment. These stories are ever evolving and growing and, in the 21st century, are being played out across both the physical and digital landscape. In response to these cultural and societal shifts, the Museum is embarking on a bold digital transformation initiative to research, refine and develop collecting and display practices in this era of digital change.

“Membership of the Digital Preservation Coalition is a fundamental step for the Museum in establishing new digital collection management and preservation activities,” explains Asti Sherring, Manager of Changeable and Digital Collections at NMA. “Engagement with DPC’s international community will certainly help us to facilitate the museum’s ability to assess, care for, interpret and share NMA collections in this interconnected world.”

Robin Wright, Head of Australasia and Asia-Pacific for the DPC was thrilled with the news, saying: “In welcoming the National Museum of Australia to the DPC we recognise that the challenge of robust and resilient access to our digital legacy is truly international. I am so pleased that NMA will be able to benefit from the expertise of the DPC membership, while we share and amplify the growing body of expertise in Australasia with the wider community around the world.”

NMA will also join the DPC’s Australasia Sub-committee, formed as part of its governance structure with the opening of the Melbourne Office in 2020. The Sub-committee ensures that Members in Australia, New Zealand and surrounding areas inform the development of the DPC’s program in the region and have input to the broader strategic direction of the Coalition.

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a sustainable future for our digital assets.
