Fixed Term

We are seeking a Digital Preservation Assistant to join us at Historic England. This is a great opportunity for you to join the team handling a growing digital image archive within the structure of a nationally important archive.
If you are looking for an opportunity to build on your existing knowledge and experience within the field of digital archiving, then this is the ideal opportunity for you.
This is a fixed term contract based in our Swindon until 31st March 2022. Whilst COVID restrictions are in place, the role may involve a blend of home and office working.

What you will be doing:
As a key member of the Historic England Archive team (HEA), you will contribute to the better understanding of our collections - what we hold, its copyright and condition - and you will ensure that the content and assets are shared in accessible, inspiring and engaging ways with a diverse range of audiences.
Through your work, you will also support the delivery of material for the purposes of income generation and improved access.
We are primarily a photographic archive and at least 80% of ingests in a typical year consist of image files (TIFFs). You are responsible for ensuring that incoming digital material is appropriately ingested and preserved in the Digital Archive and, with the Digital Preservation Officer, that records remain authentic and accessible for future users. You will undertake QA on digital data within the archive and carry out ongoing data cleaning and preservation tasks.
You will facilitate access to the digital archive ensuring that it meets the needs of users for rapid and accurate access.

We are looking for someone with:
-A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
-Proven experience of dealing competently with the equipment, software applications, and techniques required to run a digital archive
-Experience of handling digital archive material in a wide range of image formats
-A systematic and accurate approach to documentation
-A good understanding of digital processes, particularly digital preservation best practice and tools

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognize the importance of a healthy work -life balance. We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the county and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.
