In this #DPClinic session, we will be discussing how to handle diverse language characters in preserved digital content, including diacritics and non-Roman character sets. Diacritics are typically encountered as the accent marks that are used in many languages to signify alternative pronunciation and meaning. Non-Roman character sets include Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Tamil and Thai script. All are vital to the correct interpretation and understanding of our written languages, but unfortunately they can pose challenges for digital preservation when tools and processes are not designed with these extended character sets in mind.
In this session, Niamh Murphy from the University College Dublin (UCD) will give a short presentation on research she carried out at UCD on the preservation of diverse language characters, their impact on digital preservation workflows, and methodologies for handling them. Following the presentation there will be time for a Q&A and broader discussion on this topic and attendees will also be encouraged to share their own experiences of working with diverse language characters in preserved digital content.
#DPClinic is open to everyone in the digital preservation community, DPC Members and non-members alike, provided all participants are respectful and supportive of one another and adhere to the DPC's Inclusion and Diversity Policy.
DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy
The DPC Community is guided by the values set out in our Strategic Plan and aims to be respectful, welcoming, inclusive and transparent. We encourage diversity in all its forms and are committed to being accessible to everyone who wishes to engage with the topic of digital preservation, whilst remaining technology and vendor neutral. We ask all those who are part of this community and/or attending a #DPClinic session to be positive, accepting, and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others in alignment with our DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy.
