The DPC launched its Carbon Footprint Toolkit at the iPRES 2026 conference in Copenhagen and held a face-to-face workshop on the first day of the conference to share it with the community. We now plan to deliver an online version of this workshop, allowing those who were not able to attend iPRES in person to gain an understanding of the toolkit and how they might use it to calculate the carbon costs of their own digital preservation activities.

The Carbon Footprint Toolkit supports digital preservation organizations to measure, understand, and reduce emissions in a practical and proportionate way. It provides a conceptual framework for where carbon emissions arise across digital preservation services; step-by-step guidance on scoping and planning a footprinting exercise; and advice on data gathering, estimation, and transparency.

Carbon footprint calculation can be a challenging and complex area, and one that is new to most digital preservation practitioners. It involves collaboration with, and the cooperation of, colleagues across departments, as well as third-party service providers. Perfect data is rarely available, and informed estimates are often required to support decision-making. The toolkit intends to demystify carbon footprint calculation and offer practical advice on getting started. This workshop itself provides a valuable opportunity to learn about the toolkit, work with others in the community who are interested in this topic and consider how to get started.

This workshop will be facilitated by Jenny Mitcham from the DPC and Alicia Wise from CLOCKSS. It will include:

  • An introduction to the toolkit and spreadsheet tool

  • An opportunity to start using the spreadsheet tool

  • A community case study from Julie Shi of Scholar’s Portal

  • A mapping exercise

  • Time and support to consider how to take first steps towards carbon calculations

  • Networking and community discussion

  • An invitation to continue the conversation

A full agenda will follow.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who is interested in calculating the carbon footprint of their organization’s digital preservation activities. No prior experience with carbon footprint calculation is needed.
