Check your local time for the event here.
This online members-only event will be held on the 26th of November at 02:00-03:00 UTC and is scheduled to suit Members based in Australasia and Asia-Pacific regions (click for local time) but of course any DPC Member is welcome to attend.
You don’t need to join the AVSIG in order to attend one of our meetings; you just need to come from a DPC Member organization and pre-register for the event (see below) so that we have an idea of numbers.
The Audiovisual Special Interest Group (AVSIG) brings together any interested staff from DPC Member organizations to discuss issues and challenges relating to the preservation of digital content that is either audio, video, or both. The AVSIG provides an opportunity to share experiences, discuss good practice, and identify and address common problems. It aims to complement, not duplicate, the activities of any pre-existing groups, meetings, or activities that address the long-term preservation of AV content. Priority is given to discussions of real-world experiences and examples of proven good practice.
At this meeting we will hear from Andrew Martin, Digital Preservation Coordinator, National Museum of Australia. His presentation will examine the Museum’s transition from uncompressed 10-bit v210 preservation files to an open, mathematically lossless and hardware-independent format.
Andrew will outline the Museum’s format-selection rationale, technical encoding profile and proposed pre-ingest workflow.
The presentation will also describe the tests undertaken to demonstrate a valid lossless transcode. These included decoded video MD5 comparison, frame-level MD5 comparison, audio checksum comparison, timecode verification, complete decoding and compatibility testing.
The case study will consider the broader benefits of FFV1 for storage, transfer, checksum processing, OPEX packaging and Preservica ingest. It will also discuss the distinction between codec validation, Matroska container identification and software compatibility, including the limitations of representing embedded video codecs through existing format registries.
When possible, any presentations given at AVSIG meetings will be recorded and subsequently made available to Members via this event page.
If you have any questions or suggested topics for future meetings, please email: michael.popham@dpconline.org. (see below for the proposed date and time zone of AVSIG’s next meeting).
