As part of the Future Nostalgia project with Cambridge University Library, we are hosting a series of events to celebrate the release of the Copy That Floppy! media migration guide, and to show you what it takes to preserve the contents of floppy disks.

The first event is an online workshop led by Dr Leontien Talboom, who will talk us through what’s involved in floppy disk preservation before walking us through a live demonstration of the whole workflow: from assembling your own floppy disk workstation through to verifying the results! We’ll also introduce you to the Copy That Floppy! Guide, showing you both how to use and contribute to it.

If you’d like to follow along, there’s akit list here! (If you’ve always wanted a media migration station of your very own, well, Christmas is just around the corner…)

What you’ll learn

  • What is a floppy disk?

  • How to identify different types of floppy disks

  • How to set up your floppy disk workstation

  • How to clean and test floppy disk drives

  • What to look out for during the copying process

  • How to open up the contents of your floppy disks images

Copies That Flopped! support sessions

But what if you try it yourself and hit a snag? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered in our follow-up Copies That Flopped! support sessions.

A couple of weeks after the workshop, once you have had a chance to try out the workflow shared in the session, we’ll be running two online Copies That Flopped! sessions with disk-imaging experts, targeting different timezones:

  • Copied That Flopped! (Americas/EU):
17th February at 4-5 PM UTC

  • Copies That Flopped! (Australasia):
17th February at 10-11 PM UTC

If things go wrong, or you have any questions or feedback, we’ll be there to listen and to offer practical help to get you on track. Priority for these support sessions will be given to those who have the required kit and have tried out some of the activities shared in the workshop. Registration for these sessions will open at the end of the workshop on its event page here.
