A digital preservation policy is a foundational document for any digital preservation program, expressing the set of principles which will guide the organization in the way it approaches preservation activities and responsibilities. It can support advocacy, decision-making, strategy development, and the development of procedures and documentation.
In this session we will examine what makes a good digital preservation policy, how your policy will be influenced by your own organizational context, the steps you should work through to develop a policy, and how to maintain and update it over time.
By the end of the session learners will be able to:
Explain why a digital preservation policy is important in their context
Identify key elements they should include in their digital preservation policy
Begin drafting a digital preservation policy document, following recommended steps
This session is aimed at those who have a good foundation of digital preservation knowledge (e.g., they have completed the Novice to Know-How: Digital Preservation for Beginners learning pathway – although this is not a requirement) and are looking to develop policy to support digital preservation activities. This includes archivists, librarians, and other information professionals as well as those from areas such as IT and policy.
The DPC Community is guided by the values set out in our Strategic Plan and aims to be respectful, welcoming, inclusive and transparent. We encourage diversity in all its forms and are committed to being accessible to everyone who wishes to engage with the topic of digital preservation, whilst remaining technology and vendor neutral. We ask all those who are part of this community to be positive, accepting, and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others in alignment with our DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy.
