There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution to digital preservation, every organization will have different aims and requirements depending on their context and the resources they have available. This means that answers to many questions about digital preservation start with “It depends…”. If there is no “right” answer to digital preservation, how do we go about setting goals, planning for improvement, and measuring success?
The Digital Preservation Coalition believes that the answer to this question is to strive for “good practice” rather than “best practice”, as described by Jen Mitcham in her recent blog post “When is 'good' better than 'best'? In support of digital preservation good practice”. We recommend using a continuous improvement approach to building digital preservation capacity and capabilities, and have developed practical resources to help.
In this session we will introduce the concept of “Continuous Improvement”, look at how it can be applied to digital preservation, and examine two key DPC resources: The Rapid Assessment Model and The Digital Preservation Competency Framework. The session will include presentations, Q&A, and practical exercises.
This session is aimed at those who have a good foundation of digital preservation knowledge (e.g., they have completed the Novice to Know-How: Digital Preservation for Beginners learning pathway – although this is not a requirement) and are looking for tools to help them progress digital preservation within their organization. This includes archivists, librarians, and other information professionals as well as those from areas such as IT and policy.
The DPC Community is guided by the values set out in our Strategic Plan and aims to be respectful, welcoming, inclusive and transparent. We encourage diversity in all its forms and are committed to being accessible to everyone who wishes to engage with the topic of digital preservation, whilst remaining technology and vendor neutral. We ask all those who are part of this community to be positive, accepting, and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others in alignment with our DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy.
