The Digital Preservation Handbook defines digital preservation as:

“…the series of managed activities necessary to ensure continued access to digital materials for as long as necessary”

The main purpose of those “managed activities” is to address the risks faced by digital content that could prevent “continued access”. Therefore, at its core digital preservation is a risk management process and being able to identify, quantify, and mitigate the risks faced is essential. Risk management can provide a robust and practical framework for understanding and addressing digital preservation challenges.

In this session we will introduce risk management, examine risks management processes, discuss digital preservation risks, and identify key tools and resources for using risk management within digital preservation. The session will include presentations, Q&A, and practical exercises.

Who is it for?

This session is aimed at those who have a good foundation of digital preservation knowledge (e.g., they have completed the Novice to Know-How: Digital Preservation for Beginners learning pathway – although this is not a requirement) and wish to use risk management techniques to help manage their digital content. This includes archivists, librarians, and other information professionals as well as those from areas such as IT and policy.
