Digital information plays a role in every aspect of our personal and working lives. Any attempt to document what we do, from the photos taken at family events through to records of business decisions made, includes the capture and preservation of digital content. To preserve this content we need to undertake a broad range of activities that fall under the heading of “Digital Preservation”. This session will provide an introduction to the topic of digital preservation and the issues and activities it encompasses. It will aim to answer the following questions:
Why do we need to preserve digital content?
What is digital preservation?
What activities does digital preservation encompass?
What key issues should be considered when starting with digital preservation?
What resources are available to support digital preservation activities?
This session is aimed at those who are new to digital preservation. This includes archivists, librarians, and other information professionals as well as those from areas such as IT, policy, and marketing who may not work on digital preservation issues day-to-day but whose work aligns with their organization's aims in this area.
The DPC Community is guided by the values set out in our Strategic Plan and aims to be respectful, welcoming, inclusive and transparent. We encourage diversity in all its forms and are committed to being accessible to everyone who wishes to engage with the topic of digital preservation, whilst remaining technology and vendor neutral. We ask all those who are part of this community to be positive, accepting, and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others in alignment with our DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy.
