The group is providing transformational change, defining and influencing future service enhancements within the University of Melbourne. The Manager, Cultural Collections (University Archivist)  is a member of the Scholarly Services  Team which sits within the Academic Services portfolio.

About the role

The Manager Cultural Collections (University Archivist) leads and provides strategic direction to the teams with custodial and management responsibilities for cultural collections within Scholarly Services (University of Melbourne Archives, Special Collections and Grainger Museum), developing strategy, policy and frameworks for the acquisition and stewardship of these collections facilitating access, maximising visibility, engagement and integration into the academic life of the University by supporting its teaching and research priorities and maintaining and strengthening the public profile of the collections through community engagement.

The incumbent will be the University Archivist representing the University of Melbourne in this capacity both nationally and internationally.  The incumbent is required to drive transformational change, in particular, in the digital environment developing strategic frameworks to collect, manage and preserve digital archives.The University of Melbourne Archives (UMA) was established in July 1960, to collect and preserve records relating to the University's own historical records and is also a national collecting archive which develops, preserves, exhibits and provides access to its collections in support of the University's teaching and research programs and community development agenda. Today it is one of the largest non-government archives in Australia, with a collection of nearly 20km of records

About you

  • The appointee will have post graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline and management and supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and/or experience within the tertiary education sector or similar environment
  • Extensive expert experience in managing contemporary archival programs including building digital archiving and preservation services and frameworks
  • Deep understanding of the potential use of the cultural and archival collections in support of teaching, learning, research and engagement
  • Demonstrated experience in building partnerships, complex stakeholder management and experience, and driving and negotiating change
  • Proven ability to thrive in a changing and fast paced environment
