In the first meeting of the re-launched Web Archiving & Preservation Working Group (WAPWG) we're going to look at the challenges of sustaining a web archiving programme:

  • What kinds of web archiving models work for which size or shape of institution?

  • What levels of staffing are required before and, just as importantly, after establishing a programme? 

  • What skills mix / expertise of staff needed at different stages of programme maturity?

  • How do organisations adjust to the demands of collecting for topical events such as COVID, Elections or the Climate Emergency?

  • What are the obvious pitfalls, and ways to avoid them?

  • And the big one: how do organisations make the case for the resourcing they need to keep everything running?

This theme will appeal to those looking to sustain existing web archiving activities as well as to those looking to plan effectively to establish a new programme. As always, the WAPWG seeks to tackle the practical issues that our organisations are grappling with. It's there to provide a friendly forum for frank and honest discussions. And most importantly, it's about sharing our knowledge and continuing to build our community.

Who Should Come?

Delegates from any DPC member institution currently archiving web content or planning to archive web content. This might include:

  • Web archivists or curators with responsibility for selecting, managing, and preserving web content

  • Archivists or curators who include, or are looking to include, web content as part of collections

  • Librarians, research support and research data and information specialists who support researchers and institutions using web content and web-based data

  • Records managers who include, or are looking to include, web content as part of corporate records

  • IT specialists or software developers building, or looking to build, support for the collection and preservation of web content

  • Managers, directors, and policy-makers responsible for fulfilling institutional mandates and policies for preserving web content
