The Tutankhamun Spatial Archive

The Tutankhamun Spatial Archive is a major digital preservation initiative led by the Griffith Institute, University of Oxford, to preserve and transform one of the most important archaeological archives in the world. The archive comprises approximately 20,000 excavation records created during the discovery and documentation of Tutankhamun’s tomb (1922–1932) and was donated to the Griffith Institute by the excavator’s niece in 1939. It includes photographs, object cards, diaries, plans, conservation notes, and correspondence. These records document what was the only intact ancient Egyptian royal tomb – 70% of which remain unpublished.

Since the 1990s, the archive was disseminated via an early online platform, Tutankhamun: Anatomy of an Excavation, which was pioneering in its time and expanded access to the material. However, as digital technologies evolved, this legacy system became unsustainable. It lacked an underlying database, offered limited search functionality, and could no longer reflect the complexity of the archive. Maintaining the system posed growing technical and security challenges, placing a significant digital resource at risk.

The Tutankhamun Spatial Archive was developed to address these challenges through a complete restructuring of the archive. Rather than updating the existing platform, the project created an entirely new digital environment based on a data -driven system. This system enables all records to be interconnected and fully searchable for the first time. Each item is linked to related records, individuals, excavation seasons, and the tomb’s spatial context.
This metadata framework enables users to trace objects across associated documentation, from photographs to journals. It restores the complexity of the archive as a network of interdependent records, rather than a collection of isolated files. T The system supports new research by enabling movement between evidence types and interrogation of the archive. It includes temporal, spatial, and personal data, enabling more advanced search and analysis. The process of creating and refining this metadata represents a substantial intellectual and technical contribution to the project.

A key aim of the project is the development of a spatial dimension. The archive is structured around the original layout of the tomb, allowing records to be organised according to where objects were found, . Additionally, this approach reconnects material physically separated for nearly a century linking artefacts now in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo with excavation records held in Oxford, and lays the groundwork for a more complete integration of archival records with modern object numbering systems – a development that will significantly enhance future Egyptological research.

The spatial framework also opens the way for future integration with three-dimensional visualisation. Building on earlier work developed for a major exhibition, the project is developing a 3D model of the tomb allowing users to navigate the tomb and access records within a reconstructed environment. This will provide an intuitive interface for exploring the archive, for both specialists and the general public, strengthening links between documentation and context.

The archive was launched in November 2025 to coincide with the centenary of the unwrapping of Tutankhamun’s mummified body in 1925. The initial release includes a focused dataset relating to this event, representing approximately 5% of the full archive. This phased approach allows for testing and refinements while remaining material is integrated over time.

Even in its early stages, the archive demonstrates its potential to transform how users engage with the material. In the first few months the platform attracted +16,000 new users, with representation from five major continents. High levels of activity are evidenced by +200,000 recorded interactions. This reflects both the enduring global significance of the material and the success of the platform in reaching diverse audiences, from researchers and cultural heritage professionals to journalists and the general public.

Particularly strong use is observed in the database search functionality and curated narrative content, demonstrating the value of combining data with interpretative pathways. The platform further extends this approach through dedicated “Stories” and “For Schools” sections, which present selected material through narrative interpretation and tailored educational resources. While a core research tool for specialists, it is also reliable for the general public. By providing reliable information and intuitive access to primary excavation records, it enables users to engage directly with the evidence rather than relying on secondary or less reliable narratives.
More than simply enabling access, the project highlights the enduring value of archival documentation. Many aspects of the tomb, including fragile organic materials, survive only in excavation records. By preserving and interlinking these records, the archive allows lost objects and contexts to be reconstructed and studied. In this way, the project demonstrates how digital preservation can extend the life and meaning of cultural heritage beyond its physical survival.

Sustainability and long-term preservation are central to the project. The archive is hosted by the University of Oxford while back-end support from external developers ensures that in-house teams can manage and develop the system, embedding sustainability within the organisation. The platform is designed to evolve, with records added, metadata refined, and new features developed over time. By combining a relational data model with a spatial framework and an accessible interface, the project establishes a new approach to the preservation and presentation of complex archaeological archives. Its methodologies are transferable to other archaeological and cultural heritage archives, offering a model for how legacy digital resources can be reimagined for long-term sustainability and impact while meeting contemporary standards of usability and research potential. The Tutankhamun Spatial Archive not only safeguards a unique cultural resource but establishes a model for future initiatives across the digital preservation community.
