Papers for the DPC Board Meeting – September 2022

Recognizing the unusual amount of work represented by the iPres conference in September 2022, the Board decided to forego its scheduled meeting and to gather informally on the fringes of the conference. The requirement for transparency and reporting cannot be fully set aside so a briefing was prepared to keep directors informed of significant risks and financial movements in the period June to September 2022. Directors were invited to ask any questions relating to this briefing pack and, at their discretion, arrange an informal online meeting to discuss matter arising.

Environmental Impact and Digital Preservation: New Technology Watch Guidance Note now available on member preview

Added on 18 April 2024

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to give members a preview of the next in its series of Technology Watch Guidance Notes, Environmental Impact and Digital Preservation by Eira Tansey of Memory Rising, today.

The new Guidance Note gives readers a brief but wide-ranging introduction to how digital preservation activities can both affect, and be affected by, environmental change. The report examines the implicit assumptions of digital preservation, and identifies how changes in the environment might require us to re-think the risks we face and our plans to mitigate such threats.

A new way to buy a Digital Preservation System

Buying a digital preservation system has never been a quick process. They’re expensive (and definitely NOT an unconsidered, impulse buy) which almost inevitably means a full public procurement exercise. Lead times from the initial consideration (”we need to do something about keeping our digital stuff usable”) to the final deployment of a shiny, new system can be of the order of years. A not inconsiderable part of that lead time can be used up in the procurement process; deciding what bells and whistles are actually needed, who needs them, why they’re needed, who can cater to those needs and who or what provides the MEAT (most economically advantageous tender).
