Leadership Programme: Workforce Development in Digital Preservation

The DPC recognizes the very great need among our members for access to specialist training, but also the very great risks and costs that are incurred by those that provide and deliver such training. The DPC Leadership Programme offers an on-going programme of grants so that our members can attend specialist training and so that the organizations which offer training can be assured of a return on their investment.

This short video from the Digital Futues Academy explains how the Leadership Programme works. Announcements about individual calls are included below.

It has recently been redesigned and is offered in two parts: an introductory course and an intermediate course.

DPTP: An Introduction to Digital Preservation is a two day long, entry-level course aimed at complete beginners who wish to learn more about the field. It is ideal for starters in all disciplines who want to know more about digital preservation. The course is a starting point. It complements the regular Digital Preservation Coalition Event “Getting Started in Digital Preservation”, and has been devised in full co-operation with the DPC. It provides a grounding in the subject area, including basic knowledge of the range of issues that shape developments in digital preservation.

Dates: 21 and 22nd July 2014

Venue: Senate House, University of London, London

The workshop – which is taught entirely in English – is intended as a primer in digital preservation. It introduces central concepts of digital preservation, providing participants with a common terminology to understand preservation and dissemination workflows. The workshop will have a strong focus on organizational rather than technical issues and will include the following topics:What is digital preservation and why do we need it?; The OAIS reference model; Acquisition policies and selection criteria; Licensing research data for preservation and re-use; Communicating with user communities; Trusted digital repositories. Within this conceptual framework, participants will be encouraged to explore their and their organization’s (actual or envisaged) role in digital preservation and challenges they are currently facing. They will also be introduced to tools and instruments (e.g. for the purpose of self-auditing) which can support the process of shaping a reliable digital preservation service.

Attendance at First Steps in Digital Preservation normally costs 180Euro per person. However, the Digital Preservation Coalition is pleased to offer two fully funded scholarships which meet the costs of the course. Applications are welcomed from DPC members and associates.
