Web Archiving Engagement and Liaison Officer

The British Library has been archiving UK websites of cultural and scholarly importance since 2004 (http://www.webarchive.org.uk/ukwa/). The strategic priorities in web archiving are to engage dynamically with stakeholders and respond to their evolving needs.

In this key post, you will lead on engagement, developing, managing and delivering on an engagement strategy and annual action plan, to help increase efficiency and add value to the Web Archive. Your success will be shown by your ability to raise awareness and increase usage of the web archive, identify and work with new partners, develop relationships with existing stakeholders, create opportunities for collaboration and broker agreements. You will also co-ordinate input into the BL’s public programmes.
You will need to evidence your ability to work with multiple stakeholders, and develop beneficial partnerships whilst working towards the BL’s strategic priorities. You will also need to show your knowledge of new and emerging trends in digital research and the application of new technologies.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a developer to help drive the British Library’s groundbreaking work to preserve and archive the world’s knowledge in new digital formats. You will ensure our internationally renowned collection survives through time and remains accessible for future researchers.

You will be part of a research and development team that collaborates widely with libraries, archives, and commercial organisations across Europe to develop innovative digital stewardship solutions. Vacancy: Director of Curation Services, ICPSR (Univerity of Michigan)

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) seeks to appoint a Director of Curation Services to maintain and develop a comprehensive approach to data management and digital preservation. The holder of this position will lead a team with responsibility for policy implementation and planning across the data lifecycle, including metadata standards, repository management, digital preservation, and compliance with standards (such as Trusted Repositories Audit & Certification). The selected individual will report directly to the Director of ICPSR and will be a member of the ICPSR senior leadership. He or she will represent the organization to ICPSR's extensive network of partners in both the social science and the digital archiving communities.

The individual selected for this position will hold a research faculty appointment in ICPSR and the Institute of Social Research and will be based at the University of Michigan. The position may be in the Archivist (Assistant, Associate or Full), Research Scientist (Associate or Full) or Research Professor (Associate or Full) tracks, depending upon qualifications. Joint appointment with other University of Michigan units is possible.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop ICPSR's comprehensive digital preservation policy framework
  • Plan collaboratively with others to oversee the continuous evaluation of the digital repository, including all policies, standards, and workflows
  • Identify the necessary descriptive, technical, structural, and preservation metadata for ICPSR's diverse digital content
  • Evaluate and maintain quality control of metadata operations
  • Research other metadata standards to determine their relevance for ICPSR
  • Participate in the Data Documentation Initiative Alliance and in development of the DDI standard
  • Advise on methods for handling new types of digital content
  • Manage ICPSR's institutional records in collaboration with others
  • Promote the role of the organization within the digital preservation and data archive communities through a program of presentations, papers, and articles at conferences and meetings, and in journals representing key domains
  • Participate in the development of standards and good practice for the digital archiving community at national and international levels
  • Participate in training on lifecycle data management
  • Prepare proposals and applications for external funding to support both research into digital archiving and practical activities designed to enhance ICPSR's repository
  • Conduct and publish in the candidate's area of expertise

Three Vacancies at the Open University: Project Manager, Project Officer and Metadata Manager

STELLAR Project Manager (Library Services),

Following the promotion of the current post-holder the Open University Library Services wishes to appoint a skilled and experienced project manager to manage the JISC-funded STELLAR project until 31 July 2013. This project, part of the JISC ‘Enhancing the Sustainability of Digital Content’ programme strand is investigating the value of older digitised and born-digital learning and course materials. The project will also be investigating the application of semantic technologies to digital course materials, to discover whether this improves the long-term sustainability of this content.  You will need a good track record of successfully delivering funded-projects in a library environment, have excellent project management skills and a good knowledge of library technologies such as digital library systems. The role involves working as part of a small team of project managers in the Digital Services team and will work closely with the team developing the Open University Digital Library.

The team has a strong record of success in delivering innovative funded-projects and is currently running two JISC-funded projects, (STELLAR on digital content and MACON on mobile technologies), as well as two internal projects building the Open University Digital Library and implementing a reference management tool across the University. This post will be carrying out routine project management tasks across the range of projects being delivered by the team.  You will need to have experience of working as part of a project team, carrying out project administration tasks such as project reporting and budget administration. You will need to be able to work effectively as part of a project team as well as being able to work on your own on individual tasks, and be motivated and organised.

Metadata Development Officer , Library Services

We are seeking a metadata specialist to work closely with our Digital Library Technical Developer and University Archivist to recommend, implement and apply international metadata standards to a wide variety of content types. The post will ensure Digital Library content is easily discoverable, accessible and that digital preservation standards are met. You will have experience working with recognised cataloguing and indexing standards, subject indexing using recognised thesauri and an understanding of the principles of applying metadata and the range of schemas currently available. Familiarity with digital libraries and/or digital preservation projects is preferred. You will need to be able to work effectively as part of a project team as well as being able to work on your own, and be motivated and organised. Ideally you would be practised in communicating with technical and non-technical members of a team and able to liaise with end-users and understand their needs.
