Web Archiving Week events will be held at Senate House & the British Library, London between 12th - 16th June 2017
The excitement of instant information from the internet for archivists and historians has been tempered by concerns about the shelf life of data — the so-called ‘black hole’ of lost material — and the rise of a new generation of ‘born digital’ government archives.
For five days (12th–16th June), academics, researchers, archivists, curators and IT developers from across the world will converge on London to address these issues during the Web Archiving Week hosted by the School of Advanced Study at the University of London, and the British Library. Web Archive datathon
The week’s activities will start with a two-day Archives Unleashed datathon the aim of which is to develop new open-source tools and approaches to web archives, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. The datathon is led by Matthew Weber, Communication, Rutgers University, Ian Milligan, History, University of Waterloo and Jimmy Lin, Computer Science, University of Waterloo. Conference
The three-day conference focuses on researchers’ and practitioners’ use of the archived web. The programme consists of workshops, panels, lightning talks and over 60 presentations. The conference keynotes speakers are Professor Leah Lieuvrouw, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and John Sheridan, Digital Director, The National Archives of the UK. “Web Archives: truth, lies and politics in the 21st century”
The Web Archiving Week will also include a public event aimed to raise the awareness of web archiving. The panel discussion, chaired by Eliane Glaser, with scholars and experts in the field of web archiving and digital studies, is part of the popular British Library Digital Conversations series. Among the confirmed panellists are Jane Winters, Chair of Digital Humanities, School of Advanced Study, University of London, Valérie Schafer, Historian at the French National Center for Scientific Research (Institute for Communication Sciences, CNRS), Jefferson Bailey, Director of Web Archiving Programs at the Internet Archive and Andrew Jackson, Web Archiving Technical Lead at the British Library.
