Colchester

£18,412 per annum, pro rata

The UK Data Archive is curator of the UK's largest collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities. It is also a partner in delivering the UK Data Service, an online portal for social science data, documentation and guidance. Both are vital resources for researchers, policymakers, teachers and students around the world.

This temporary post is part of a pilot project to investigate applying Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) numbers to our data studies in order to achieve greater flexibility in the organisation of quick subject access to our datasets via subject category links on our webpages.

Previous stages of the pilot have successfully added UDC numbers. We now need to carry on this work by adding UDC numbers to the latest studies that have been added to our collection. This will be achieved using UDC Online and entering the results into an Excel spreadsheet. Training will be given.

The position offers an opportunity to gain experience of working in a digital social science information service environment, by working on this classification project using prestigious, well-used information tools.

Additional tasks, time permitting and undertaken with supervision, may include a review of indexed studies for the purpose of re-indexing.

Essential:

  • knowledge and/or understanding of social science data
  • accuracy and attention to detail
  • IT literacy, including Excel

Desirable:

  • experience of data entry
  • experience of working with thesauri or in a library/information service/archive

This work is expected to take 0.5 month working full-time but the work can be done on a part-time basis over several weeks.
