Members' recommendations of digitization services

Coalition members have a great deal of experience in providing and contracting digitization services.  Although other sources of advice on digitization are more up to date and thorough, recommendations about digitization are frequently sought from the DPC.  In May 2010, staff at the Open University did a rapid survey of recommendations of digitization services used or provided by DPC members.  The resulting list is for information only and may be helpful for those considering digitization: we deemed that it was more useful to publish the results of the survey so that others might use it than simply to keep the results internal, but please note this is not intended as a specific endoresement or recommendation: it is a record of the Open University's helpful research. You may also want to read our report on Digital Preservation and the JISC Digitization Programme.

Serco Artemis Digital Services

Artemis is delivered by prisoners working with digital files in a secure custodial environment.  Prisoners add metadata as required by the client.  We’ve worked with the British Library, The National Archives, British Film Institute, BBC, Staffordshire Record Office and others during the proof of concept, and now commercial work.

As well as providing a cost-effective transcription/metadata annotation service, Artemis makes a significant positive impact on prisoner skill development and digital literacy.  By providing prisoners with new skills we hope that Artemis will make an impact on rehabilitation and reducing reoffending.

Suggestions about digitization are regularly desired from the DPC. In May 2010, personnel at the Start School did a fast study of recommendations of digitization solutions used or offered by DPC. The producing record is for details only and may be beneficial for those considering digitization.Increase the interoperabilit y and availability of electronic selections across through sticking with to approved requirements.
